Beyond the Back Dam...

A Country of Unimaginable Beauty...

Famous for its rivers, mountains, stunning scenery, and its majestic waterfalls, including Kaieteur Fall, the highest single drop waterfall in the world standing at five times the height of Niagara Falls, Guyana is nothing short of a paradise for nature and adventure lovers. With almost 85% of the country under lush, tropical rainforest, Guyana allows its patrons to enjoy nature at its very best.

Yet, for most Guyanese residing overseas, Guyana is that narrow strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Back Dam. Almost 80% of the population has never ventured beyond the Back Dam, Unbelievable, but very true!

Yes! Most have never seen the Majestic Kaieteur Fall, Orinduik Fall, the Mazaruni rapids, the historic Dutch Forts, the mountainous North West Districts, the flat lands of the Rupununi Savannah or the rolling grasslands of the upper Canjie Creek. Have you?

Even more, many Berbicians have never been to Linden, Bartica or the Essequibo coast. Likewise, many from Essequibo and Georgetown have never crossed the Berbice River. Are you one of those persons?
It was not surprising, therefore, when the Guyana Consulate published the Eldorado Magazine featuring Guyana's tourism attractions that many Guyanese were awed by its contents. "I am sure that these pictures were taken from one of the Caribbean Island", one reader commented.

Indeed, Guyana's challenges in the past years discouraged many who wanted to holiday in Guyana from doing so. But almost 90,000 Guyanese visited their homeland last year. Few took the opportunity to get beyond the Back Dam. An even fewer number took the day trip to Kaieteur, which costs less than $200.

"Our Festival Committee wants to change this and feels that every Guyanese should visit Kaieteur Fall at least once," said Danny Doobay.
